Base-building strategy is one of the most popular genres on Android. You build a fortress, train an army and test both against other players. The games below take that idea in very different directions. We make Raidcrown, so we have included it, but we have tried to be fair to every game on the list.

Clash of Clans

Best for: the classic formula at its deepest.

Clash of Clans from Supercell defined the genre in 2012: a village around a Town Hall, three-minute raids scored in stars, and clans that fight Clan Wars. More than a decade of updates means a lot to do at every level. How Raidcrown compares.

Boom Beach

Best for: modern-military island raids and co-op.

Boom Beach, also from Supercell, swaps the village for a tropical archipelago. Troops land from boats to destroy an enemy Headquarters, a Gunboat backs them up, and Task Forces take on Operations together. How Raidcrown compares.

Castle Clash: World Ruler

Best for: collecting and upgrading heroes.

Castle Clash: World Ruler from IGG is a medieval-fantasy base-builder built around a large roster of heroes, with many modes to use them in. How Raidcrown compares.

Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade

Best for: a huge shared world and historical civilizations.

Rise of Kingdoms from Lilith Games is a 4X strategy game: you pick a civilization, build a city on an open map with thousands of other players, and march armies across it in real time with your alliance. Base-builder or 4X?

Lords Mobile: Kingdom Wars

Best for: heroes plus guild-based kingdom wars.

Lords Mobile from IGG combines castle building, a cast of heroes and guild wars on a shared kingdom map. Base-builder or 4X?

Raidcrown (coming soon)

Best for: raids that play like heists, and fair play you can check.

Raidcrown is our game, coming soon to Android. Every base hides a Crown in a vault the defender can put anywhere. A raid earns three marks: Breach the walls, Seize the Crown and Escape with it to your boats, where a successful getaway pays a 50% ransom. Houses of up to 40 players fight boost-free Feuds. There are no loot boxes and no ads, and our fair-play page publishes the numbers behind matchmaking and the store. Join the newsletter to hear the day it launches.

How to choose

  • Want quick, self-contained raids? Clash of Clans, Boom Beach or Raidcrown.
  • Want a massive shared map and long wars? Rise of Kingdoms or Lords Mobile.
  • Want to collect heroes? Castle Clash or Lords Mobile.
  • Want every raid to be a heist? Raidcrown.

Whatever you choose, check how each game handles spending: whether there are random paid items, whether boosts work in competitive modes, and whether everything that affects battles can be earned. Our guide to what makes a strategy game pay-to-win explains what to look for.
